How to Change Your World With a Single Word

The MOST important lesson I learned in 2017 is that words are power.

words

Last year on New Years Day, I started a practice that has transformed my life. I decided to say a prayer and ask God and the Infinite Universe to bless me with a word for 2017. A word that would represent the lesson I needed to learn, the gift God wanted to give me, and what I should focus my attention on.

As I was kneeling, the word came to me: POWER.

I was immediately disappointed. I wanted something more romantic or exciting. Like LOVE, or ABUNDANCEOFTACOS (look it up, its in the dictionary). To me, power was a word I associated with something that old white dudes used to control and manipulate minorities. Not something I wanted anything to do with at all.

So I asked God for another word, and again, my mind was FILLED with the word power.

So I decided to look it up:

POWER (N): the ability to do something or act in a particular way, the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events, a supernatural being, deity, or force, physical strength, energy. (V): to move or travel with great speed or force

I realized that power had a lot more meaning than I initially thought, and I decided to give the word a chance.

Then one day, when I was studying some scriptures, I came across these verses:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - John 1:1 and "Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light." - Genesis 1:3

Like, hear me out. God literally SPOKE WORDS, and then light came to be. I'm sure there is a lot of science behind the origin of light but I don't believe that God and science are separate so stay with me here people.

And thats when I learned the most exciting truth EVER:

WORDS CREATE WORLDS

The words we speak, type, text, and think, create the reality we each experience. Our words literally write our life stories, and we can change these stories dramatically simply by exercising control over our words.

So by selecting a word for each year of your life, you give that chapter of your life a title, and direct the way your story is told.

My word, power, taught me the power of words.

So to find your word for 2018 heres what you do:

1. Pray or Meditate and Allow Your Word to Come to You

Whether you are religious, this practice begins with the willingness for a higher power to help you level up. If I had simply picked a word for myself, I would have spent the year eating focusing on abundanceoftacos. If you absolutely can't get behind the idea of a higher power, its still better to have the word tacos than nothing, because who doesn't want more tacos. But really, by allowing your word to come to you, you open your world up to unimaginable growth.

2. Study the Definition

The more you understand your word, the more your word can teach you. Study the definition, and if you want to REALLY geek out, study the origin of your word. It will change your perception, and allow your word to teach you on deeper levels every day throughout the year.

3. Place Your Word Where You Can See It Every Day

What we focus on expands. The more you focus on your word, the more you will learn and grow. And the best way to focus on something is to keep it in your line of sight. Stick your word on your mirror, or put it on a piece of jewelry. Let it serve as a daily reminder to who you want to become this year.

My word for 2018 is TRUST, and I am unbelievably excited to see what this word can teach me and who I become through it.

This is a challenge I invite you to accept, and promise if you do, your world in 2018 will be transformed. If you accept, leave a comment below on this post with your word, as I would love to hear and follow along with your story.
